What is sports nutrition?
Sports nutrition describes the study and practice of nutrition and diet and how it relates to athletic performance.
Sports nutrition is concerned with the type and quantity of food and fluid consumed by an athlete, and deals with nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, supplements and organic substances such as carbohydrates, fats and proteins.

Why use sports supplements?
Whether you are a keen amateur or elite athlete, it is important to recognise that many sports will place significant demands on your body that the average diet is simply unable to cope with.
A lack of energy reserves and insufficient bodily nutrients can often make it difficult for athletes to perform at their very best. However, a good, well balanced diet supported by carefully selected, high quality nutritional supplements can provide the answer, playing a key role in boosting performance, minimising recovery times and maximising sporting potential.

Can I buy sports supplements from Bodybuilder?
Bodybuilder supply highly formulated sports nutritional products that are scientifically designed to enhance athletic performance. We work with elite athletes and professional sports teams across the United Kingdom and internationally. Currently we do not offer our specialist sports science services and nutritional products to the general public.
Should I consult my doctor before taking sports supplements?
All Bodybuilder products are safe to use however, we do recommend that you consult your doctor before taking sports supplements, especially if you have any previously diagnosed medical conditions. This is also true when embarking on any new exercise or fitness programme.
Are supplements classed as medicines?
Sports supplements are considered foods, not drugs. While some sports supplements may have medicinal properties, they are not regulated in the same way as prescription and over-the-counter medicines. There are however certain substances and technologies that are banned by the World Anti Doping Agency (WAPA) and sports governing bodies, see below.

Are Bodybuilder products suitable for vegetarians?
All our products are suitable for vegetarians.
Are Bodybuilder products suitable for diabetics?
All our products can be used by diabetics as part of a tailored nutritional plan. The specific carbohydrate content of individual products must be taken in to account when developing your nutritional strategy.
Are Bodybuilder products suitable for younger athletes?
Our standard energy and hydration products can be used by athletes of all ages when taken as part of a well-balanced diet. However, other more specialist supplements are not normally recommended for athletes under 16. If you are in any doubt please ask us.
How much protein should I be consuming?
Nutritional and sports science research suggests that typical adult athletes should ideally be consuming 0.8g to 2.5g of protein per kg of body weight per day. However, protein consumption for athletes involved in high power and strength based activities may need to consume more protein, up to 4.0g kg of protein per kg of body weight per day.

Are Bodybuilder products suitable as meal replacements?
Our sports products are not suitable as meal replacements. They should only be consumed as part of a planned, well-balanced diet. Bodybuilder products have been scientifically developed to supplement a healthy diet and assist athletes in optimising their sporting performance.
What is carbohydrate loading?
Carbohydrate loading describes a popular nutritional technique often used by endurance athletes (long distance and marathon runners) to maximize their bodily stores of energy in the form of glycogen in the muscles prior to training or competition. Pasta parties are popular before a marathon competition.

Why is athlete hydration important?
Maintaining good levels of hydration during and after training or competition is vital. Dehydration can have a detrimental impact on athlete performance, both physically and mentally. It can also hider post-training recovery processes. It should therefore be avoided.

How can hydration affect performance?
Maintaining good levels of bodily hydration is one of the most effective ways to maintain athletic performance. Dehydration related loss in body weight of only 2% can reduce athlete performance by up to 20%.
What is an isotonic fluid?
Isotonic is a term used to describe a balanced solution that contains a similar salt concentration to an athletes blood. Osmotic pressure allows the isotonic solution to move freely into the bloodstream from the stomach.
What are the prohibited substance lists?
Certain sports supplements may be prohibited by a sport if that sports governing body considers that the supplement (or a component of it) provides an unfair advantage in training or competition.
The World Anti Doping Agency (WADA) lists substances and technologies that are considered banned for elite athletes. Their list, which is updated regularily contains details of specific substances that could be used to cheat in sport.

What is a steroid?
Steroids are a type of fat soluble compound that can be either natural or synthetic. Examples of natural steroids include testosterone and pro-hormones (DHEA and androstenedione) which the body converts to an anabolic steroid.
The most common prohibited steroids are androstenedione and DHEA.

What is a stimulant?
A stimulant is a general term used to describe a substance that temporarily speeds a bodily process. Stimulants are relatively common compounds and include caffeine, appetite supressants, over the counter medicines; and recreational drugs such as amphetamine and cocaine.
The most common prohibited stimulants are ephedrine and methylephedrine.

Are Bodybuilder products safe to take?
Yes, all Bodybuilder products are safe to take. None of the ingredients used in our nutritional products are based on substances currently identified on the WADA prohibited list.
